More Than Meets the Eye

The Government is proposing to replace the Disabled Living Allowance (DLA) with a new benefit, the Personal Independent Payment (PIP), designed to save the treasury more than £1 billion by 2014/15. NBCS shares the concerns of the Royal National Institute for Blind People (RNIB) that the changes will will threaten the independence of and support available to blind and partially sighted people.

The Welfare Reform Bill, introduced into Parliament in January 2011, heralds a number of changes to out of work and disability benefits which RNIB is concerned will threaten the independence of and support available to blind and partially sighted people. The changes come against a backdrop of severe Local Authority spending cuts which also threaten the provision of vital services at the local level.
