Instructions

There are a number of things you can do to customise the way your internet browser works. Below are instructions on how to make some of the most popular browsers more accessible. These instructions cover Internet Explorer, Netscape and Firefox.

Internet Explorer instructions

Change fonts and colours...

  1. On the browser Tools menu select 'Internet Options'
  2. On the General tab, select 'Accessibility'
  3. Click on the three boxes to show ticks
  4. Click 'OK' to enlarge text
  5. On the browser Tools menu select 'Internet Options'
  6. On the General tab, select 'Accessibility'
  7. Tick the 'Ignore font sizes specified on web pages' check box
  8. Click 'OK'
  9. On the browser menu select 'View'
  10. Click 'Text size'
  11. Choose the size of text

Change text and background colours...

  1. On the browser Tools menu select 'Internet Options'
  2. On the General tab, select 'Colour'
  3. Deselect the 'Use Windows colours' tick box
  4. Select the box next to 'Text' and choose a colour
  5. Click 'OK'
  6. Select the box next to 'Background' and choose a colour
  7. Click 'OK'

Prevent images appearing...

  1. On the browser Tools menu select 'Internet Options'
  2. On the Advanced tab, scroll down to the 'Multimedia' heading
  3. Deselect the graphics options 'Animations', 'Videos', 'Pictures' and 'Images' by clicking on the boxes to remove the ticks
  4. Click 'Apply' then 'OK'

Change the size of the window...

  1. On the browser View menu select 'Full screen' or press F11.

Change the colour of hyperlinks...

  1. On the browser Tools menu select 'Internet Options'
  2. On the General tab, select 'Accessibility'
  3. Click on 'Select ignore colours specified on Web pages' (should contain a tick)
  4. Click 'OK'
  5. Select 'General' tab and click on 'Colours'
  6. Turn off the 'Use hover colours' tick box (should not contain a tick)
  7. Select 'Visited' and choose the colour that suits you best, click 'OK'
  8. Select 'Not Visited' and choose the colour that suits you best, click 'OK'
  9. Select 'OK' for 'Colours'
  10. Select 'OK' for 'Internet Options'

Netscape, Mozilla and Firefox instructions

Change text size...

  1. Click on 'Edit' and select 'Preferences'
  2. Select 'Appearance' and click on 'Font'
  3. Choose the 'Variable Width Font' and 'Fixed Width Font' that you want
  4. Click 'OK' to set these fonts for all future use, click 'Use my default fonts overriding document specified fonts'

Change text and background colours...

  1. Click 'Edit' and select 'Preferences'
  2. Select 'Appearance' and click 'Colours'
  3. Select the box next to 'Text' and choose a colour
  4. Click 'OK'
  5. Select the box next to 'Background' and choose a colour
  6. Click 'OK'
  7. Click 'OK' to close the 'Preferences' window
  8. To set these colours as your browser default, click on 'Always use my colours, overriding document'.

Prevent images appearing...

  1. Click 'Edit' and select 'Preferences'
  2. Select 'Advanced'
  3. Deselect the graphics option 'Automatically load images' by clicking on the box to remove the tick
  4. Click 'OK'
