About Us:

Our Work

child readingThe National Blind Children's Society’s objective is to enable children and young people with visual impairment to achieve their educational and recreational goals.  Our vision is a world where children with a visual impairment have an equal opportunity to the provision of education, which is adequately supported with sources of information provided in a suitable format for their needs and where there are no barriers to sports and recreational activities.  We offer help and support from the moment a child is diagnosed, usually at birth, through each key stage of their education to the age of twenty-five.

By working in collaboration with other organisations and professionals associated with visual impairment NBCS offer five ‘Key Services’ which are provided either free or at a nominal charge these are: -

  • Educational Advocacy Advice - to ensure the child receives the best possible education in the correct environment.
  • CustomEyes Books – a large print book service, tailor made to suit the child’s eye condition.
  • ICT & Sensory Equipment – ensuring the child has the correct equipment at home and at school.
  • Holidays & Activities – a recreational programme offering choices and opportunities to the child and family.
  • Family Support & Information – offering advice and holistic support along with a directory signposting families and careers and children to services and provisions which they can access for further support and information.

The National Blind Children’s Society rely on voluntary donations from individuals, companies and grant making trusts. We do not receive any statutory funding at all.
